The Romans arrived at the rocky headlands of Tarragona in the 3rd century BC, and proceeded to raise the town behind great stone walls, which upon completion encompassed three towers and stretched to some 64 kilometers in length. Avid builders that they were, the Romans left behind no less than a theatre, an amphitheatre, a great circus ground, an impressive aqueduct, and an imperial forum once surrounded by small shops. Julius Caesar had a home in Tarragona, and so did the Emperor Augustus. Architectural layers are a great part of Tarragona’s charm. The old medieval town contains some wonderful examples of Moorish, Gothic, and Romanesque design. Constructed on an ancient Roman site and over top a mosque, the Cathedral de Santa Maria is a splice of all.
