When the setting sun ignites a red glow in the evening sky, Tafraoute’s normally flushed-ochre and outlined-white houses are magically recast in the most pleasing shades of pink.

Nestled in the quiet valley of the Anti-Atlas, the village charms for the natural beauty of its location, but also for the architecture. The Tafraoute people take great pride in home building, even with limited resources. Tafraoute is mostly inhabited by the woman and children of Ameln. The men depart for Europe to make ends, but return each season to care for their properties and provide for the families they must leave behind.

The Ameln Valley is beautiful stunted plain dotted with almond trees, olive groves, and 26 Berber villages clinging to mountainside and plateau. Among these, the petit and pretty Tioulit sits all tucked and composed on a perfect pedestal, and with a full view of the valley on all sides. By comparison, Taghdichte sits highest up on the Jbel Lekst, looking down over the valley from a height of nearly 8000 feet.
