Asilah is a delightful beach town situated on the North Atlantic coast of Morocco. Its deserted beaches, small shops, and simple Mediterranean architecture, together create the perfect Moroccan idyll. The town is walled, Andalusian-style, and its narrow streets are often paved with the same lime-wash which covers its houses. You might never guess that like the other Moroccan port towns, Salee and Tangier, Asilah was a once-upon-a-time haven for Barbary pirates.
The pirates are now long gone, and although a few hustlers can still be found, Asilah is home to a popular cultural festival and a good many artists, whose colorful murals can be seen throughout the city. The townfolk are laid-back and friendly, as is to be expected from people who live life in white houses just minutes away from a sandy coastline. |
